Chateau de Chambord is one of a very few to have come out of France's turbulent years relatively unscathed, with only minor modifications to the structure. Originally conceived as a hunting lodge by François I in the early 16th century, the chateau later served as a summer retreat for successive monarchs. The whimsical exterior is typical of the French Renaissance style combining medieval flourishes with renaissance architecture.
