The capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is situated at the merger of the Alzette and Petrusse rivers. Luxembourg's beginnings can be traced back to when Siegfried I was awarded the present day city's land in 963 through a treaty and built a castle there. The city has become a major financial center in Europe and possesses a unique mix of ancient and modern architecture. Points of interest include the Grand Ducal Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Pont Adolphe, Place de la Constitution, Neumuenster Abbey, Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial and Place d'Armes.
