This port city located in the greater Athens area is mostly known as a departure point for the Greek islands as ferries from here go to almost all of the numerous inhabited islands in Greece. Piraeus has been the port of Athens for many centuries and today is the biggest port in the Mediterranean. Piraeus is rather congested and blends in with the urban sprawl of Athens and is low on attractions. However, the Piraeus Archaeological Museum is worth a visit for its amazing statue of Apollo, the oldest hollow bronze statue yet found that dates from about 520 BC. Show All
