This waterfront district around San Francisco Bay at its port is highlighted by the stunning Beaux Arts style Ferry Building. The Embarcadero translated as "a place to embark" in English dates back to the late 1800s and became one of the busiest pedestrian areas in the world during the early 1900s until the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936. Today, it is a popular commercial district with boutiques, restaurants, hotels and attractions. The Embarcadero contains the The Central Embarcadero Piers Historic District as well as the Justin Herman Plaza with its recognizable Vaillancourt Fountain. Show All
