Germany's oldest city is situated along the banks of the Moselle River and dates back to 16 B.C. with its founding by Emperor Augustus. Trier contains many amazing ruins including Porta Nigara, Basilica of Constantine, Trier Cathedral and Roman baths of its early history. The city was sometimes referred to as "The Second Rome." Other notable sites include Trier Amphitheater, St. Matthias' Abbey, Rheinische Landesmuseum Trier, Saint Paulinus' Church, Roman Bridge and the Karl Marx House.
