Designed by renowned architect Daniel H. Burnham in Beaux-Arts style drawing inspiration from the Baths of Caraculla and Diocletian and Arch of Constantine, this train station opened in 1907 with the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Pittsburgh Express. Union Station in Washington, D.C. was the subject of the largest renovation project ever in the United States with public and private funding of $160 million under a 1981 act by Congress to preserve the landmark as a national treasure. There are now more than 90,000 visitors daily to the station that features more than 100 specialty stores, six restaurants, 35-plus international eateries, a variety of services and the headquarters of Amtrak.
