Epidaurus was once a famed center for healing in Classical times. People from all over flocked to the Sanctuary of Asklepios (the Greek God of Medicine) in Epidaurus seeking a cure for their afflictions. The revenue from this steady flow of visitors allowed the city to build a number of civic monuments, the most remarkable being the theater.
