The largest museum in the United States and one of the biggest in the world has more than two million art works ranging from prehistoric times to the present. The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in 1870 and its 2 million-square-foot building is located in New York City's Central Park. Its vast collection includes approximately 15,000 American works, 2,500 European paintings, 36,000 Egyptian pieces, 12,000 Islamic objects and 35,000 costumes.
