Often just referred to as the National Zoo, the 163-acre Washington, D.C. park featuring 1,800 animals representing 300 species is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. Smithsonian National Zoological Park was created by an Act of Congress in 1889. It's open almost every day of the year excluding Christmas and offers free admission. Exhibits include Amazonia, American Trail, American Bison, Asia Trail, Elephant Trail, Giant Panda Habitat, Great Ape House, Lemur Island, Reptile Discovery Center, Small Mammal House and Think Tank.
