A tribute to the 16 million who served in the United States Armed Forces, the more than 400,000 who died for their country and those who backed the war effort from home, the National World War II Memorial opened in Washington, D.C. on April 29, 2004. The 7.4-acre site has a memorial consisting of 56 pillars with one wreath on each side encompassing a plaza with two 43-foot pavilions, four bronze columns with American eagles, 24 bronze bas relief sculptures and a Freedom Wall with 4,000 gold stars.
