Itinerary

Experience a traditional brush (or Fude) making in Kumano, known as a brush town. After observing the demonstration and listening to the explanation by a traditional craftsman/experienced brush master, Fudeshi, you will experience the actual process of brush making from Koromoge Maki to the finishing touch. Those who have experienced "Koromoge Maki Course" are impressed by the brush they finished themselves and felt a sense of accomplishment. Upon receiving the reservation, your name will be curved on the handle of a calligraphy brush so you can bring your original calligraphy brush with your name on it when you get home. *PLAN DETAILS 1. Welcome to Houkodou! Simple guidance will be given before the experience. 2. Watch the demonstration Watch the demonstration and listen to the explanation by a traditional craftsman/experienced brush master, Fudeshi. 3. Koromoge Maki process The flattened hair wrapped around the core of the brush neck is called Koromoge. For Koromoge, a higher quality hair is used compared with the hair used for the core. The brush neck which is beautifully wrapped with Koromoge will be dried naturally. The bottom of the dried brush neck is tied tightly with hemp thread. 4. Itojime Tie the bottom of the brush neck tightly with hemp thread and burn it by branding iron quickly. This is how the brush neck is completed. 5. Kurikomi "Kurikomi" is the process of placing the brush neck into the handle. The handle is made of wood or bamboo. Rotate the axis of the handle on the Kurikomi table and scrape the inside of the opening of the handle evenly so the brush neck can fit into the opening easily. Put adhesive to the opening of the handle and fit the brush neck firmly. 6. Finishing touch Dip the bristle of the brush neck into a special kind of glue. Fasten a thread around the bristle, rotate the axis, and remove the excess glue. Shape the brush neck neatly and dry it. Then the last step is fit a cap to the brush neck. 7. Receive your original calligraphy brush Upon receiving the reservation, your name will be curved on the handle of a calligraphy brush so you can bring your original calligraphy brush with your name on it when you get home. 8.
