The 100-mile-long Washington state inlet of the Pacific Ocean is the second biggest estuary in the country. Puget Sound joins with 19 different river basins and contains a mixture of salt water and fresh water. Explorer George Vancouver claimed the waterway for Great Britain in 1792 and named it after his lieutenant Peter Puget.
