This former high-maximum security federal penitentiary is located on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay 1.25 miles off the coast. Famously known for housing some of the nation's most notorious criminals, Alcatraz was in operation from 1933-1963 and is frequently called "The Rock." The U.S. National Historic Landmark that is an extremely popular tourist attraction also contains the oldest functioning lighthouse on the country's West Coast, former military forts and rock pools.
