The Georgia state capital is also the most populous city in the state and hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics. Atlanta was established in 1837 as the terminus for the Western & Atlantic Railroad of the State of Georgia. The city was completely destroyed during the American Civil War with the majority of its buildings burned down.
