This California beach city began when Midwesterners Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story purchased property in 1886 to build a seaside resort. The Queen Anne Revival architectural style Hotel del Coronado was constructed and caught the eye of investor John D. Spreckles, who purchased the hotel and built other developments.
