Nicknamed "The Venice of America," the tropical city situated on Florida's southeast coast is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, The New River and many inland canals. Fort Lauderdale was incorporated in 1911 and received its name because of the many forts constructed there in 1838 during the Second Seminole War when Major William Lauderdale commanded the Tennessee Volunteers.
