Phillip Island was first visited by European explorers in 1798 and had long been home to indigenous Australians. It was named after New South Wales' first governor Arthur Phillip and is located approximately 87 miles from Melbourne. A 2,100-foot bridge connects the 39-square-mile island to the mainland.
