Itinerario

Small-group tour of Jordan featuring the highlights of Petra, Jerash, the Dead and Wadi Rum plus much more

If you're looking to explore some of Jordan's most popular attractions such as Petra and Jerash, then this small-group Jordan tour is ideal, as we delve deep into its rich history, unique culture, its Middle Eastern cuisine and its rugged beauty. We start in Jordan's busy capital of Amman - as we make our way to its towering 'Desert Castles' before we explore Amman on foot, enjoying falafel and hummus at a local restaurant before we learn a few Arabic phrases to use throughout the Jordan tour. From Amman, we make our way to Jerash - one of the best Roman sites in the Mildde East. We'll take a hike to the imposing Aljoun Castle and search for the massive Bronze Age Dolmens, before spending the night with a Jordanian family as we learn more about their lifestyle. The next stop on our Jordan tour is a visit to the Roman Mosaics at Madaba, which offers breathtaking views of Jericho and Israel from Mt. Nebo, before we head to the Dead Sea to stay in a 4-star hotel, floating in its highly saline waters. After spending a few days at the Dead Sea, we'll head to the beautiful scenery of Dana Biosphere Reserve for a short hike in the hills around Dana village before we make our way to the Crusader Castle at Shobak. From here, we make our way to Petra - the main attraction of our Jordan tour. We'll enjoy a guided tour of this rose-red city, before getting some free time to explore it independently. You can choose to walk up to the Monastery and the High Palace of Sacrifice before we make our way to the Wadi Rum Desert, where we'll camp underneath the stars with the Bedouins. The next day sees head out on a jeep safari through Wadi Rum's desert terrain before spending time helping a local Bedouin shepherd with a few of his daily activities, as we gain a better insight into the lives of the locals. After lunch, we'll say goodbye to the desert as we make our way back to Amman to visit a coffee shop, try a shisha or enjoy a game of backgammon, as we look back at our time in Jordan. This Jordan tour connects well with our Egypt and Israel tours, and can also be run privately at any time if our group departures don't work for you or you would like to customise the itinerary a little, perhaps adding on some time by the Red Sea in Aqaba.

Day 1, Your Jordan tour begins in Amman. Airport to hotel transfer included Once you arrive at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, we'll be there to meet and transfer you to your hotel in Jordan's busy capital city. Once you've settled in, we'll let you know the plan for the next few days and arrange a time to collect you tomorrow. You have the rest of the day free to relax in your hotel or explore the city independently. | OVERNIGHT: Amman hotel | EXTRAS: Extra day in Amman - pre-tour, Single room supplement (required for solo travellers if a same-sex room share is not available) Day 2, Visiting Jordan’s imposing Desert Castles After a tasty breakfast, we start the day with a trip to Jordan's ancient desert castles of Qasr al-Kharrana, Qal’at al-Azraq and Qseirr Amra which can be found along the old trade routes which were frequently used during the Umayyad era. There are still reminders left behind of this time period, such as frescoes, wells and bathhouses - visiting it will give you great insight into learning how these ancient structures were built. We make our way back to Amman at lunchtime, where we'll have falafel and hummus at a local restaurant. Afterwards, we'll head out on a sightseeing tour of Amman - visiting its popular attractions such as the Citadel, the Amphitheatre and the Jordan Folklore Museum. We'll also have some time to visit Amman's markets, giving us the chance to taste some of its unique sweet treats such as Knafeh - before we are taught some basic Arabic phrases which will come in handy throughout our Jordan tour. | OVERNIGHT: Amman hotel | MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch Day 3, Exploring the ancient city of Jerash & Aljoun Castle After spending a few days in Amman, we'll make our way to the city of Jerash, which is often known as the "Pompeii of the East". Its known for being one of the largest and well-preserved Greco-Roman cities outside of Europe. We'll explore some of Jerash's top sites, which includes the Forum, its Roman colonnaded streets, the Nymphaeum and the Temple of Artemis - built on one of the highest points in the city. From Jerash, we'll visit the Aljoun Castle, which served as the base for Saladin’s Arab forces when he defeated the Crusaders in the 12th century. Its also a great destination for a hike, with its surrounding mountains, hills and forests boasting a variety of trails. After exploring the Aljoun Castle, we head to the Rasoun village, where we'll meet our homestay hosts for the evening, who will help us settle into their home. We'll then make our way to the hills around the village to witness the Bronze Age Dolmens - megalithic tombs created with massive stone slab atop two or more standing stones. We'll head back to the village, where we'll enjoy a traditional Arabic meal made by our hosts, as we spend the rest of the night chatting and gaining insight into their daily lifestyle in Jordan. | OVERNIGHT: Rasoun homestay | MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner Day 4, Travel from Ajloun to Madaba, Mount Nebo & the Dead Sea After a shared breakfast this morning, we'll say our final goodbyes to the Jordanian family as we make our way to Madaba, visiting the impressive Madaba Map - the oldest preserved map of the Holy Land as well as its beautiful Byzantine mosaics. After visiting Madaba, we'll head to Mount Nebo - the location where Moses cast his eyes over the Promised Land and it's also his final resting place. We'll have some lunch before we travel to the Dead Sea, giving you the perfect opportunity to float in its salty waters or relax poolside at a Spa Resort. | OVERNIGHT: Dead Sea Spa Resort | MEALS: Breakfast Day 5, Exploring Dana Biosphere Reserve and Shobak Castle en-route to Petra Today, we'll make our way down the Dead Sea coastline, passing lots of deep canyons and gorges as they meet the sea. After we pass some salt flats at the southern end of the Dead Sea we head up through the mountains towards Petra, stopping for a short walk in the beautiful scenery and hills of the Dana Biosphere Reserve along the way. This is Jordan's largest nature reserve, and there are great views of the valleys and hills on the various trails around the restored Dana village. Spring is a particularly lovely time to visit with the terrain surprisingly green and full of flowers. We'll stop for lunch and take a walk before continuing to the imposing crusader castle at Shobak, finally arriving at Petra in the evening. An option is available this evening to get a first taste of Petra on the atmospheric Petra by Night tour, during which the Siq Trail and area outside the Treasury are lit up with hundreds of candles. | OVERNIGHT: Petra hotel | MEALS: Breakfast | EXTRAS: Petra by night Day 6, The rose-red city of Petra and a Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp We start the day with a visit to one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World - the ancient city of Petra. We'll make our way through the winding Siq, until we reach the impressive Treasury. Our Jordan tour guide will educate us on its history, as we learn how this magnificent site was built by the Nabatean people, who carved caves and tombs into the sandstone cliffs which surrounds you. We'll have some free time to hike up to the imposing Monastery with great views overlooking the Jordan Valley or to walk up to the High Place of Sacrifice. Later in the day, we'll head to the Wadi Rum desert, as we'll spend the night camping underneath the starry skies with the Bedouins. You can sleep in a traditional goat hair tent, with a proper bed and all bedding provided, or take a sleeping bag and find a secluded location to sleep outside under the stars. | OVERNIGHT: Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp | MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner Day 7, A jeep safari and Bedouin experience in Wadi Rum. Travel to Amman We'll enjoy breakfast with the Bedouins, before we head out on a jeep safari, over the sands of the Wadi Rum desert, stopping every now and then to marvel at its towering sand dunes and rock bridges. Afterwards, we'll take part in a few activities inspired by Bedouin traditions, such as assisting a local shepherd with his cattle until we reach a Bedouin tent, where we'll help make lunch. Other activities which you can participate in include shearing the sheep & goats hair, milking, grinding grains, and roasting coffee until our lunch is ready. After lunch, we head back out in our jeep as we make our way back to camp, before we journey down the Desert Highway, back to Amman. Tonight, we'll explore the town, visiting a coffee shop or café near our hotel in Downtown Amman to enjoy a shisha, a game of backgammon and to reminisce on our Jordan tour. | OVERNIGHT: Antika hotel | MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch Day 8, Free time in Amman. Hotel to airport transfer included You have the day free to do some final shopping and sightseeing in Amman before we collect you at our hotel and transfer you to the airport to board your flight home. • Accommodation
The hotels used on this tour are rated at the Jordanian 3 and 4-star level. Local star ratings may vary from international standards but we ensure we use some of the best hotels available at the level stated. We have also aimed to use hotels in Amman that have a better location than most, with a range of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. Accommodation is based on twin or double en-suite rooms with air conditioning. All couples will have a private double room.

A friendly local homestay is included for one night in Rasoun village. Accommodation is in shared rooms holding up to 4 people. There are a number of homes in the village that will accommodate guests, so depending on our final group size we may split across several houses. We will all eat together in one house with the hosts, who will also provide a tour of the village. All beds and bedding are provided. Bathrooms are separate and shared but quite basic. Overall you can expect a simple but comfortable, and very welcoming experience with good food and interesting insights into local village life in rural Jordan.

In Wadi Rum we use a Bedouin camp located inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area. Accommodation is in permanent traditional goat hair tents with proper beds and all bedding provided. Bathrooms are separate, though some en-suite tents are also available and subject to availability you can upgrade to these locally if you wish. You can also bring a sleeping bag if you wish, and find a sheltered spot on the rocks on the edge of the camp and sleep under the stars.
  • Transport
Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you're really experiencing the country you're travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. The small distances involved in Jordan mean that we use private vehicles throughout this tour. These will be minivans, minibuses or coaches, depending on the number of travellers in the group.

The jeeps used in Wadi Rum are provided by the local Bedouins we work with, and while suitable for your desert safari, they may fall below the normal safety and quality standards for vehicles we use during the rest of our tours.
  • Activity level
This tour includes several walks or hikes and while you do not need to be super fit by any means, you should bring suitable footwear.

In the Ajloun Forest Reserve we will hike through scrubland and forest for several hours in the afternoon. The guide will vary the route and duration of the walk based on how everyone is feeling and the current weather.

In Wadi Mujib we will take one of two hikes through the Mujib Biosphere Reserve, the lowest nature reserve in the world. During the summer months of April to October, we'll take the Siq Trail for 2-3 hours along the course of the river between towering sandstone cliffs to a pool at the base of a large waterfall. The gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming and you should expect to get wet along the way so we recommend having a change of clothes ready for when you get back. Some scrambling may be required, but this is not a proper canyoning adventure so nothing is too difficult. We recommend wearing shoes not sandles to protect your toes. You should also be able to swim.

In the winter months of November to March (and if recent rains mean the Siq Trail is not available), we'll take the Ibex trail for 3-4 hours along various dry Wadis, walking on rocky paths and tracks so you'll need comfortable walking shoes here and a daypack to carry your camera, water bottle etc.

The walks here are guided by local staff from the RSCN (Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature) and a minimum age is set of 18.

In Petra, you will be doing a lot of walking to explore the site. The minimum distance you'll walk, from the entrance to the Siq, through the Siq to the Treasury, through the site to the Theatre and Byzantime church, and then back out again, is around 8km. If you would like to hike up to the Monastery, or High Place of Sacrifice, you should expect to add another 2 or 3km, much of it up or down. You can take everything at your own pace, but do be prepared for a long day. Again comfortable walking shoes and a daypack are required.
  • Group Size/Tour Leaders/Guides
We are committed to being a small group operator, as we feel this gives everyone in the group the best chance to get to know their fellow travellers and to hear and make the most of their guide. There's no point in us providing great guides if you've got to peer over 30-40 shoulders to see them! So, on our small group tours we won't ever put you in a full size coach packed with other people and just one guide. Having a smaller group size also allows us to stay in more interesting accommodation, like the homestay in Rasoun, and to include some activities and experiences that just wouldn't be possible with large numbers.

This tour has a minimum group size of 2, and maximum of 14.

To accompany you on the tour we provide an English speaking local tour leader/driver and specialist guides in Jerash, Amman and Petra. Groups of 5 or more will have both a driver and a professional guide throughout the trip.

We only use local Jordanian guides and reps. We feel this gives you the best experience of the country and the sites you are seeing.
  • Entrance Fees
The tour price includes include entrance fees to all the tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary (worth about US$110). If you visit any sites not mentioned in the itinerary then you will need to cover the entrance fee costs.
  • Health and Vaccinations
You should ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including emergency evacuation and repatriation.

Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary according to the country you are visiting and where you are travelling from. We recommend you contact your GP/medical practitioner or a travel clinic for current information on vaccinations needed for your destination. You should ensure that you are up to date with vaccines and boosters recommended for your normal life at home, including for example, vaccines required for occupational risk of exposure, lifestyle risks and underlying medical conditions.

In addition, additional courses or boosters normally recommended for the countries in this region are:

    Egypt: Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A
    Jordan: Tetanus, Hepatitis A
    Israel: Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis
    Lebanon: Dipheria, Hepatitis A

Malaria is not generally present unless it has been contracted abroad; you do not need to take malaria prophylactics.
Note: We are aware of some places in Egypt using 'black henna' instead of pure brown henna. Black henna contains a chemical dye PPD (paraphenylenediamine) which can result in severe allergic reactions and resultant scarring. To be safe we recommend avoiding any henna tattoos while in Egypt unless you are certain they are using pure brown henna.
  • Passports and Visas - Jordan
Passports should be valid for at least six months after your departure from the country. Please do not bring an almost full or almost expired passport. Visa arrangements are the responsibility of the traveler, and requirements are subject to change by the local authorities.

To promote tourism to the country, the Jordanian government is currently waiving Visa fees for certain nationalities (including UK, USA, CA, EU, AU, NZ, SA). When confirming your reservation with us, please could you complete all passport details on your travellers information sheet and return it to us promptly and at least 4 weeks prior to departure so that we can take steps to arrange your free arrival visa if available. The free visa offer requires a stay in Jordan of at least 2 nights if you are arriving by air, or 3 nights if you are arriving by land.

Multiple entry visas for Jordan are no longer available and you will need to arrange two visas if you are doing a combination tour (eg. with Egypt and/or Israel) that visits Jordan more than once.

If you wish to arrange your visa in advance or your stay will be shorter than described above, then a visa fee of 40JD (approx. USD 57) will be due.

Other nationalities may require a visa prior to arrival and to obtain this in advance, please contact your local Jordanian embassy or consulate or a visa agency for details. In addition, if you plan to enter Jordan via the southern Wadi Araba crossing (Eilat-Aqaba) or the Allenby Bridge/King Hussein border with Israel in the north, you will need to obtain your Jordan visa in advance as these are not available on arrival at the border.
  • Voltage
Sockets are two round pronged and 220 volts (Type C). Universal adaptors are available in most airport shops if you don't have one already. Standard European adapters will work fine, though sometimes they may feel a little loose in the sockets. All hotel rooms have electrical sockets where you can re-charge cameras, phones etc. Hair dryers are normally available on request from the hotel reception if not in your room already. If you have US appliances (110 volts) you will need a voltage converter as well as a plug adapter.
  • Money - Jordan
The local currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JD). You do not need to arrange to bring any Jordanian Dinar with you to Jordan as exchange facilities are available in the international airports and in most hotels, banks and bureau de changes in major towns.

You should try to obtain and keep hold of small denomination notes or coins on you during the tour as these are useful for toilets, tips and small purchases. ATMs are readily available in major towns and many local shops will accept VISA/Mastercard or Amex, but may charge fees of up to 10% - check before you pay. Travellers cheques are not recommended as they can not be changed in many places now, and can incur high fees.

While in Jordan you will need sufficient funds to cover meals not included in the itinerary, drinks, snacks, souvenirs and personal expenses such as laundry. These should generally all be paid for in Jordanian Dinar, though tips for guides and drivers may be paid in hard currency (GBP, USD, EUR).

It is difficult to recommend a level of personal spending money which will suit everyone as this can differ greatly, but as a guideline, we would suggest allowing USD 15-25 per person per day as a minimum. Allow more if you plan on doing lots of shopping, or buying many alcoholic drinks.
